Today’s Board of Estimate and Contract marked a step forward for community-police relations as the Board approved a contract with a firm to provide body-worn cameras for all Mount Vernon Police Officers.

Mayor Thomas has long championed body-worn cameras, and other law enforcement investments, to ensure the city is protected and the community is secure. This original contract was discussed as early as July 2017 and advocated for by many Mount Vernon Police officers as well as community activists and elected officials. Best of all, it is funded primarily by a Department of Justice grant received by MVPD making taxpayers safer at no charge to their wallets.

So why the delay between award and authorization? Most grants require contract approval and matching funds in order to be successfully implemented. This body-worn camera one is no different. While we appreciate the full support on this measure from the City Council and the Comptroller, it’s important that further grant opportunities are not delayed or missed. We will continue to prioritize obtaining grants that improve quality of life and lift the burden from taxpayers’ shoulders.
