Mount Vernon Announces Additional Investment Discussions with International Firm

Mayor Richard Thomas released the following statement today regarding Amazon’s selection of the New York metropolitan region as the site of its new headquarters.

“Welcome to the neighborhood, Amazon. We are not surprised that Amazon chose the area as the site of their new headquarters. As an edge city with a diverse culture and growing economy, Mount Vernon is looking forward to working with Amazon as they develop their New York roots. In the coming months, we will be seeking to partner with New York State, New York City, and the region to support and capitalize on the incoming jobs and development. Mount Vernon’s ferry, currently in preliminary planning stages, will be a valuable asset for commuters seeking a quick ride to Long Island City. Mount Vernon boasts the third-fastest growing economy in New York State and we are continuing to grow. We look forward to working with Amazon.”

In additional economic development news, the Administration met with a group of international investors who have a sports entertainment-based portfolio to discuss opportunities in Mount Vernon. Today’s discussion included Memorial Field and the waterfront as possible sites.

Mr. Henry Leong, CEO of Trung Hau International, the investment group, released the following statement: “We believe in Mount Vernon and Mayor Thomas’ vision of economic growth: investing and prioritizing clean water, fixing sewers and infrastructure. The vision to build a ferry from Mount Vernon to LaGuardia Airport is connected to real economic growth. Due to the combination of the mandate to fix broken sewers and invest in infrastructure, as well as, the redevelopment of Memorial Field into a major destination for sports and entertainment, Mount Vernon is an attractive location to invest hundreds of millions of dollars.

The city’s location, accessibility, diversity, and vibrant culture are unmatched in the New York metropolitan region. After analyzing the #ChooseMV economic development plan and touring the city, my international investment team is prepared to enter discussions with the Administration to discuss the investment of $100 million or more. This will allow us to make historic Memorial Field a year-round facility capable of hosting a multitude of competitive events, along with dining, shopping and modernization options that will support the global tourism trade.”
