Oliver, Steve and the Power of Love

Today, Cherish and I joined dozens of Mount Vernonites at “Cleopatra Hair Salon” ( 35 North MacQuesten Parkway) to celebrate the reunion of “Oliver” and Steve Carino.

Many of you responded to the call to find Oliver, a Shih Tzu-Yorkie mix, who was stolen, lost, and found by Manny and Walaa, owners of Cleopatra Hair Salon and Sandwich King on Macquesten Parkway.

Steve described the depth of his despair at the loss of his dog. He talked about how Proverbs 3 helped him find hope, strengthen his faith, and bond with Mount Vernon on Bond Street.

The power of love is real. And Mount Vernon love is beautiful, deep, and powerful.

Steve, a white guy from Northern Westchester, suddenly found himself on the West Side of Mount Vernon. Desperately searching for his dog. Learned that it is a “Beautiful Life” indeed. He described how his eyes were opened to see the REAL Mount Vernon. One that is rich in tradition, culturally diverse, and deeply rooted in faith and family values. Better, he and his sister, Laura Schroff, re-discovered the greatness of Johnny’s Pizza in the process!

Thanks to Manny and Walaa for their unconditional kindness in rescuing Oliver.

Cherish and I are so proud of our Mount Vernon Police Department, local businesses, and families that came together to help bring Oliver back home to Steve.

As Facebook would characterize this situation as “complicated,” this story is a reminder that Love wins. Love overcame the hate, the agony, and the pain following the loss of Oliver. Love powered through to prevail.

The People of Mount Vernon are on that same road to return Memorial Field and build up our city for good families for years to come. Let’s enjoy this Mount Vernon Moment as we get ready to move forward.

Thank you, Mount Vernon, for stepping up to help reunite this family and thank you for all the Real Love!
