On Tuesday, January 16, 2018, Mayor Richard Thomas was joined by Mount Vernon clergy leaders at a press conference where he signed a declaration as part of a #Rise Up initiative calling on President Trump to “apologize to Haiti, Africa, Mexico and the fee world for his insensitive, ignorant and hollow un-American words.”

Mayor Thomas called on people everywhere to support the #Rise Up effort by signing a petition on Change.org urging the President to apologize for his comments.

“Bad language and labels are a distraction,” said Mayor Thomas, referring to President Trump’s recent expletive-laced remarks on immigration. “We need a real dialogue. Not a reality TV rant. I am asking the President to elevate his game. Our kids are watching and frankly a lot of what they are seeing is disgusting and inexplicable. We can do better and unless we do better, the rut we are in will only get deeper.”

The Mayor had the full support of Mount Vernon’s clergy leaders who said that they have had enough of the lies, alternate facts, and all-out attacks on anyone who shines a light on the haphazard way he chooses to run his administration and speak through social media. Of particular concern was the harm that comes to communities like Mount Vernon, which happens to be home to thousands of immigrants who come from the countries that the President dismissed so callously.
