Mayor Thomas Meets with U.S. Mayors in Nation’s Capital

This past week, Mayor Richard Thomas joined mayors across the country at the U.S Conference of Mayors 86th Annual Winter Meeting in Washington D.C.

Issues discussed included:

· access to capital the in face of the new tax code

· developing new ways to pay for crumbling infrastructure

· the cost burden of federal regulations on local municipalities

· the prospects for immigration reform.

Specific conversations included talking with Senator Cory Booker on Mount Vernon’s #RiseUp challenge to replace fear with hope and with James C. Dalton of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about Mount Vernon’s crumbling sewers, the path forward, and what kind of help the Corps can offer. Mayor Thomas also met with NBA representatives as well as folks from Target regarding Memorial Field.

Mayor Thomas also got other mayors to join him in congratulating Mount Vernon Basketball Coach Bob Cimmino on his 500th victory. On the sports front, there were also talks with representatives of Major League Baseball to partner with the city and school district for youth baseball programs.
