Mayor Thomas used the occasion of “Bring Your Dad to School Day” at the Pennington Elementary School on Tuesday to discuss ways the school district and the city could work together to continue to improve Mount Vernon for all ages.

During his presentation, Mayor Thomas reminded the PTA and the 60 dads in the audience that last year he offered to assist the school district with funding to renovate older school buildings and playgrounds through the City’s Capital Plan if the district would make the facilities available to the community after hours. He also informed them that he is still waiting for a response and encouraged them to push for the School Board to come to the table and discuss this potential partnership.

During the presentation, Mayor Thomas also provided the dads with flyers regarding afterschool programs provided by the city, some free and some offered at reduced costs. These programs are one of the ways the City is reaching out to help bridge the gaps for working parents, and ensure our kids have a safe place to continue learning and do homework after the last bell rings.
