Mount Vernon City Hall Goes Orange for Hunger Awareness Month
September is Hunger Action Month. Mayor Richard Thomas and the City of Mount Vernon are partnering with Feeding Westchester to raise the awareness of those suffering from food insecurity by turning Orange! City Hall’s outdoor lights will be turned orange to raise the public profile of this need and to highlight the ways we are combatting hunger in our four-square miles.
49 percent of Mount Vernon residents live at or below the poverty line which translates to almost 3 million missed meals for families that need to eat but cannot afford to put food on the table.
Mayor Thomas and Feeding Westchester are committed to bring fresh food, from farms to residents’ tables. Twice a month, we distribute fresh FREE produce to any Mount Vernon resident who wants healthy food. Over 500 families are able to take part in this program and access nutritious options for meals every other Friday.
