Mount Vernon DPW ‘Does It All’
The Mount Vernon Department of Public Works like to say, “we do it all.”
It is hard to argue. From sewers, to streets, to ballfields, when its broken and needs fixing, the call goes out to the men and women of the DPW.
On Wednesday, May 23, 2018, Mayor Richard Thomas held the first annual DPW Awards Ceremony to recognize the department’s hard work, which extends across parks, sanitation and highways. This past winter brought extreme challenges that included large amounts of snow, heavy rains, high winds and widespread power outages.
“This department is known for its muscle, but it should really be known for its heart” said Mayor Thomas. “It takes a lot of heart to go out there every day and break your back and flex your muscles, and do the work of the city. So, I want to say thank you to all of you here, to the leadership of Commissioner Nigro and Deputy Commissioner Amiano, and to the whole department.”
The awards ceremony was an opportunity for Mayor Thomas and Commissioner Joe Nigro to thank members of the department for their hard work and passion for moving Mount Vernon forward. Among the awardees were 11 seasonal employees who this year became full time employees. An award was also given to the entire department, which will be displayed at the DPW yard this summer.
