The City of Mount Vernon Youth Bureau hosted a Pre-Kwanzaa & Holiday Celebration for the participants in the Girls Embracing Maturity (GEM) program on Friday, December 14th, 2018, at the Luxe V Events. The event was well attended. Approximately 100 attendees were entertained with song, poetry and dance; the event was a celebration of family, community and culture.

Mayor Richard Thomas stated, “The Bureau will continue to provide programming that develops internal assets such as positive values and sense of purpose. Providing youth with cultural enrichment and asset building opportunities is essential to positive development.” Mrs. Debbie Burrell–Butler, Executive Director of the Bureau stated “We have the opportunity to actively impact the growth of these young ladies, who are on the path to defining their self identity and establishing their place in community.”

The celebration consisted of African drumming and dance, trivia questions on the principles of Kwanzaa, as well as how other cultures celebrate the holiday season. The night concluded with performances by the GEM participants; the young ladies enthusiastically performed readings of poetry, a holiday song, and a choreographed dance. Parents received praise for the work that they are doing, while participants proudly received certificates of acknowledgement for their community service and participation in the program.

Funding for this program was made possible through the Westchester County Youth Bureau.
