Early this morning, Mount Vernon’s Bravest battled the fifth major blaze in the city in less than six weeks. We are incredibly grateful for the brave men and women of the Mount Vernon Fire Department as well as our municipal partners across Westchester County. Running into burning buildings to save lives while everyone is running out takes a special brand of courage.

Fire, particularly during periods of extreme cold, is something all cities must prepare for, especially cities as dense as Mount Vernon. The administration is continuing to take steps to strengthen public safety in Mount Vernon, including by investing in preventive measures such as funding additional inspectors in the fire and building departments as well as completing a comprehensive plan that incorporates safety and sustainability as guidelines.

For those interested in participating in the city’s upcoming fire relief drive, email us at MayorThomas@cmvny.com or call us at 914–665–2361.
