Still Turning the Lights On After the 2018 Winter Nor’Easter

Since Friday, March 2nd, Mount Vernon has been speaking with Con Edison and working with them to coordinate and expedite power restoration efforts. We have let them know that their response to this storm has been unacceptable.
We demand and deserve accurate information. The public deserves to know when Con Edison crews will arrive to reconnect power, fix downed power lines, and restore services. I told the leadership at Con Edison that bad news is better than fake news. We need to know exactly how many people are without power and where, so that we can effectively provide assistance to those affected.
Despite the fact that Con Edison has failed to manage for these storms, the City of Mount Vernon will continue to work non-stop. The Department of Public Works has been deployed around the clock since the storm started, complimented by Police and Fire. Areas hardest hit will continue to be monitored closely with municipal crews working on the clean-up effort. The city is prioritizing clean-up and tree removal in residential neighborhoods first to ensure life safety with parks to follow.
To further ensure the health and welfare of our residents, I have instructed the Doles Center and Armory to remain open as needed to serve as warming centers for those without heat and charging centers for those without electricity. There will be emergency meals and bottled water available as well.
If you stay in your home and the power is out, please do not resort to lighting your house with candles. This is a major cause of fires during blackout events so please be sure to use flashlights instead. If you are using a generator, make sure to place it in a well-ventilated area outside your home or business. Never operate a generator indoors.
AVOID DOWNED POWERS AND UNNECESSARY TRAVEL!
