On Thursday, January 10, 2019, approximately 55 participants enjoyed a wonderful theatrical experience in New York City for the classic story of King Kong on Broadway. Participants were enamored with Broadway’s bright lights and captivated as they watched the cast bring this well-known story to life.

The production was visually stimulating and filled with life lessons. The play reflected today’s shifting cultural ideology. In the past, the lead character Ann Darrow, portrayed as a helpless screaming blonde, was replaced by a “feisty fearless woman” played by an African-American actress who forges a friendship with King Kong.

Throughout the play, the irony in the message behind the portrayal of King Kong’s monstrousness was well received. Our youth and other audience were compelled to contemplate the question, “who is the real monster when a wild creature is caged, subdued, and subsequently killed.”

This field trip was generously funded by the City of Mount Vernon; Westchester County Board of Legislators; Westchester County Youth Bureau, and the Community Development Block Grant Urban Renewal Agency.
